What are the Advantages of a Digital GPR System Over an Analog System?

We have already discusses what GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar -is. But this week we will focus on the advantages digital GPR offers over analog GPR.

It is actually quite simple. GPR systems rapidly acquire radio frequency signals, capturing these signals for analysis and interpretation. This process requires a very sophisticated electronic system. This is where digital GPR outshines analog GPR.

The benefits of digital GPR and digital equivalent time sampling (DETS) include:

•           Timing and signal amplitude stability and fidelity.

•           The ability to use digital compensation schemes to assure time base linearity and calibration.

•           Acquisition of GPR data on demand without the need to keep analog clocking running.

•           Removal of analog filtering stages in audio portion ETS circuits which can create distraction.

•           Ability to collect spatially synchronized data (i.e. data are collected at known location triggered by user or electronic positioning). No need to rubber band to take out traverse speed variations.

•           Ability to use programmable stacking versus GPR delay time.

•           Ability to log a variety of diagnostic data with each GPR trace.

Why Choose GPR?

•           Real Time Results- After a GPR scan a field Mechanic can send it to their supervisor who will then clean up the images and forward them to their client and /or structural engineer for their review

•           No Radiation

•           Can Scan up to 24”- However, in most areas 16”- 18” are scanned more accurately (images are visually clearer). Depth of scan is determined by how many targets are in the concrete slab

•           GPR is Safer than X-Ray- gives off less of a signal of a cell phone

•           GPR Scan can be performed on one side of a concrete slab

If you have any more questions about Digital Ground Penetrating Radar, please contact Concrete Visions LLC, a division of G&M Services LLC by calling 410-787-8828 or click here to visit GMServices.ws!

Our scanning services are so accurate that in 2010 we performed 6,800 scans with only 7 reported incidents. These statistics support our philosophy that the proper training of our field mechanics leads to better GPR accuracy for our clients.
